Iron & Sulphur Water Filter Troubleshooting and Repair in 7 Easy StepsUpdated a day ago
Chemical-free iron and sulphur systems are a great choice for homeowners because they don’t require any chemicals to operate. That means no ongoing cost for chemicals and no risk of introducing harsh substances into your septic system. Instead, these systems use air to oxidize iron and the rotten egg sulphur smell, which is then flushed away during regeneration. One of the most common reasons these systems stop working is a clogged air inlet venturi.
In this post, we’ll walk you through how to fix that specific issue on an "air over media" style system, one of the most popular types out there. Not sure how these systems work?
f your unit uses a Mazzei valve, watch this video instead for servicing instructions. Now, let’s go over the steps to troubleshoot and repair the issue when your system is no longer drawing in air:
Repair Steps:
Put the valve into regeneration by holding the “Regen” button for 5 seconds until you hear it start.
Once it begins the backwash cycle and starts counting down, press and release the “Regen” button again to advance it to the next stage.
During the “Brine” cycle, listen for a gurgling or sucking noise from the air draw at the top of the valve. If you hear this, you likely need to replace the media in your filter.
If you don’t hear air being drawn, the injector or venturi is likely clogged and needs to be cleaned or replaced.
Bypass the valve, detach the drain line, and drain any remaining water. Then reattach and secure the line.
Remove the injector cap and gently pry out the injector, noting its color. Clean the port, then reinstall or replace the injector.
Replace the injector cap, return the unit to service, and listen during the next brine cycle to confirm the air draw is working again.
